Lisette Schumacher is a visual artist whose work revolves around research on modern architecture. Often, the formation of a new series starts with careful observation. She explores new environments by visiting residential complexes or architectural sites, taking note of the construction of these space, their shapes and dimensions. She pays special attention to how light is optimized for the user. Her visits to architectural sites involve her taking numerous pictures and absorbing and memorizing the atmosphere. Back in her studio, in-depth research into technique, material and colour schemes results in abstract, layered and spherical paintings in which spaciousness is determined by colour transitions and contrast. Gradients symbolize light falling and spreading into a certain space. Her artistic practice revolves mostly around painting, although she has explored the realms of sculpture and installation as well.
During her one month stay at Iris Project Residency she will broaden her field of research by visiting several structures designed by American architects including the Stahl House, Case Study House No. 22 by Pierre Koenig, the Eames house, Case Study House No. 8 by Charles and Ray Eames, and the Hollyhock House by Frank Lloyd Wright.
Her work has been exhibited in the Netherlands, Belgium and Italy. She has exhibited at Root Gallery (Rotterdam NL), Art23 Contemporary Art Gallery (Guangzhou CN), ARTFEM biennial (Macau CN), Co/Lab Project with Tiger Strikes Asteroid LA – Torrance Art Museum (Torrance, US), Urban Museum Schiedam (Schiedam NL), Fringe Arts festival (Bath UK) and TENT (Rotterdam NL). Her work is part of numerous private collections in Europe, Asia and America as well as is part of corporate collections including the UMCU collection and Isala collection. She is chairman at Foundation Mesh and she was a committee member for Research & Development subsidy at the Centre of Visual Arts Rotterdam for three years.
