JAKE DEERING
Iris Project Resident: November 4 - 18, 2023
SUN SPA is an exercise in world-building that investigates the aesthetics, performative mannerisms, and sense of liminal sanctuary or respite that spa spaces provide. Spas are a re/generative place of escapism from contemporary life — i.e., the scourge of the screen and the unending flood of images/advertisements clogging the pineal gland. Deeply embedded in this work are ideas of solar worship as an accessible site of euphoria and ecstasy beyond the current incarnation of bodywork in spas with its ties to capitalism. SUN SPA does not ignore the stickiness and contradictions that make living in the 2020s unique. This work culminates in wall-mounted images, installed objects, and a digitally formatted lookbook of clothing and accessories.
Jake Deering (They/Them, b. 1999, Portland, OR) is interested in the challenging tension of how somatosensory ideas clash with the very tangible relationship of fashion and capitalism, represented physically in their body of work through digitally printed clothing and molded/cast accessories. Previously, they’ve used silicone gel/foam to create handbags and clothing appliques; they’re continuously drawn to these materials due to silicone’s relationship to the skin and how it can emulate its nuanced texture while still maintaining a synthetic discretion.
This residency program is possible thanks to The Ford Family Foundation's support and partnerships with Yucca Valley Material Lab and Venice Arts.
