Alisha Sofia
Iris Project Resident: September, 2019
“In this new series, the characters will be rediscovering themselves through frustration, shame, ancestral trauma, nostalgia, joy, and beauty. I plan to have a series of masks as well. The faces will be bold and mystical and vaguely based off of influential Queens from the Caucasus. This body of work is a regeneration of the soul and consequent discovery of oneself.”
Born in Glendale and raised in Los Angeles, Alisha briefly attended SAIC, and went on to complete her degree at Art Center. When we asked her about her use of the female form, she shared:
“I was raised by women for the most part, so they have always played a prevalent role in my life. My grandmother inspired me to paint and play the piano; my mother and other grandmother inspired me to cook and make things beautiful; my sister continues to inspire me every day with her art and philosophy on life. I’ve learned a lot from all of these women and plan to continue and learn from them for the rest of my life.”
